Price slashed $3k - or best reasonable offer! Durant Motors produced this Star Truck from 1924-1926. This truck has been owned by one local family since new. Manufactured in Canada and bought at the R.A. Doty Star Dealership in Oakland. The truck has spent its whole life here near Yosemite. Originally owned by a local farmer who raised sheep, cattle, and turkeys on his father's 120-acre historic ranch on the edge of the town of Groveland ("Gateway to Yosemite"). It was used primarily to go to market in Oakdale. Less than 13,000 original miles; totally restored nearly 20 years ago. Used very little since and stored in a garage under a huge cover.
The Star was an automobile marque that was assembled by the Durant Motors Company between 1922 and 1928. Also known as the Star Car, Star was envisioned as a competitor against the Ford Model T. In the United Kingdom, it was sold as the Rugby, to avoid confusion with the British marque Star. From 1928 to 1931, Durant marketed trucks in the US and Canadian markets under the badge Rugby Trucks.
Like other products of the Durant Motors Company, the Star was an "assembled" car, built from parts supplied by various outside companies. Stars were powered by a four-cylinder engine; that engine would endure until 1926. All factory-installed engines were built by Continental.
"Willy" Durant was the founder and CEO of General Motors. He left GM in the early 20's and founded the Durant Co. He designed the Star to compete with Ford's Model T and Chrysler's Maxwell/Plymouth. Durant was later bought out by Dodge Bros. Some Dodges of that era had a small D on the rear hub caps which denoted it as having a Durant rear end, trying to use up the old stock. Many star automobiles were scrapped out in later years for the engines which were used in many commercial fishing boats.
