Vehicle Description

Believe it or not, Right Hand Drive (RDH) for this vehicle is valued about 10% higher than LHD. The current owner, a local collector, needs to trim his stable. Very substantial restoration work was recently completed and is listed near the bottom of this ad.

The year 1984 saw a new short-wheelbase version of the 110, the Land Rover 90 (Ninety). The wheelbase was actually 93 inches, but all of the improvements of the 110 were added to the new model, including a stronger frame, bigger windows and larger payload. Axles were located by radius arms and a Panhard rod up front and trailing links at the rear. Approach and departure angles also improved. This Defender 90 has Land Rover’s first-ever turbocharged engine. This TDi engine helped Land Rover redress a decline in European sales. It was the biggest and most potent version of the basic Series units, and the final incarnation of the most enduring in-house Land Rover diesel engine.

The continued resilience of the 2.5-litre diesel formula would surely cope with a Garrett AiResearch T2 turbocharger, which was needed to match the performance of European competitors. Land Rover’s engineers bolstered the engine for turbo performance with improved crankshaft bearing lubrication (which also helped cool the components), and with new pistons and exhaust valves to withstand the higher combustion temperatures. An oil cooler further controlled temperatures and a viscous fan and lighter components contributed to marginal gains on fuel consumption. The turbo set up provided increased low speed torque, which could be tapped instantly thanks to negligible turbo lag. But the bottom end proved unsuitable for the stresses associated with turbocharging, resulting in cylinder block cracking and crankshaft bearing failures until a redesign of the block and crank bearings in 1988.

According to Hagerty Valuation Tools the value of this model is up and average of about 35% since the beginning of 2021 to these current levels: #1 Concours $87,100, #2 Excellent $63,400, #3 Good $38,600, #4 Fair $17,600. We offer this iconic vehicle at $44,900.

Note: Just before the vehicle was delivered to us it was picked up from a local paint/body shop - with the right-side door repaired in a distinctly different green. We have been using a top South San Francisco shop for over 17 years that serves mostly dealers and wholesalers. Their painter is very talented and is not color blind. Their rates are substantially below normal retail. Photos were taken after a 2-day Dust Bowl-like wind storm; we apologize for the dust.
