Vehicle Description

Price cut $1,400! Arguably among the most desirable years for the VW Karmann Ghia are 1970 and 1971: these are the first years for the larger 1600 cc engine, standard front disc brakes beginning in 1970 when carpets replaced rubber mats, and they still sported the attractive original-style bumpers. In 1972 Karmann-Ghias got heftier bumpers and gained even larger taillights. We would argue that Pampas Yellow with a Black interior is the most attractive color combo for this car.

The Autostick transmission comprised only about 10% of production; cars ordered with it got the new double-jointed rear suspension. Driving this car nearly 4 hours from Lake Tahoe to near Yosemite on 2 lane winding mountain roads we were truly amazed at how well it rode and handled: very neutral cornering with no noticeable tail wag (probably the rare suspension), no tire squeal at well above average speeds, and the biggest surprise: the transmission is enjoyable! You hardly ever have to use more than the two highest gears. The brakes are great..."way up firm and high", alla Bob Seger.

The 1600s were the quickest Karmann-Ghias: capable of 0-60 mph in about 21 seconds and a top speed of around 86 mph. The 1600s also had better stopping power, thanks to their standard front disc brakes.

This coupe is an all-original CA car except for the paint and the transmission. It was purchased about 1989 with 55k miles from the 2nd owner, an Atherton woman who used it as a weekend car. The speedometer stopped working shortly after the current female owner bought it. A new speedometer was installed in October 2020 using the face and odometer of the original. The car hasn't been driven 2k miles in last 15 years since a new transmission was installed. When the transmission was replaced the mechanic suggested replacing the pan - even though there was no rust - which was done. ZERO rust anywhere. The current owner used as commuter from Atherton to SF for 3 years: 55k + 30k = 85k. Otherwise used as weekend car that was rarely driven (they own 4 other cars). When they moved to SF from Atherton the car was brought to their weekend home at Stateline, NV (South Shore) because of lost garage space.

The car was repainted 12 years ago to the original Pampas Yellow (driven less than 2,000 miles since, and always garaged). Flaws: the headliner has a tear, the wood grain dash is wavy, and the driver seat has a tear. The entire interior could be redone for less than $2k including labor. All parts are readily available on Karmann Ghias and are relatively inexpensive.

Hagerty Valuation Tools: #1 $52,600 Concours (up 62% in 12 months), #2 $27,900 Excellent, #3 $14,900 Good (up $800 in two weeks, up $2,800 since January 1st), $4 $7,400 Fair. The value surge of #1 justifies a total restoration of a lower condition car. We offer this beautiful, enjoyable, and appreciating coupe for $16,300. This car is in our warehouse in Groveland - "Gateway to Yosemite". Note: at the end of the photos after the vintage advertising there are 8 photos of any exterior imperfections that we could find; some are greatly zoomed in and don't distract unless one gets vey close up.
